Our province and our beaches
On the coasts of the Province of Guanacaste, 2 hours from International Daniel Oduber Airport in Liberia and 4 hours from International Juan Santamaría Airport in San Jose, are the beaches of Samara, Carrillo, Camaronal and Buena Vista, on the shores of the Pacific Ocean.
Playa Samara is the most developed in as far as infrastructure and tourist activities go, and also well known for its scenic views.
The main activities here are: tourism, which has grown a great deal in the past few years, fishing, and the harvesting of tropical fruits for exportation such as mango, melon, and watermelon.
Playa Samara has a Bank, ATM, super market, schools, tourist information centers, car-rentals, police station, physicians, pharmacy, artisan workshops, restaurants, bars, hotels and much more.
A real paradise awaits visitors to the area. Playa Samara and its sister beach Playa Carrillo, identical in extension and beauty, have still waters and gentle waves that please tourists who wish to enjoy swimming in the ocean, walking or horseback riding at sunset along the seashore.
In the center of the towns of Samara and Carrillo, there are several restaurants and tourist information centers where visitors have Internet services or can reserve tours to the infinite tourist destinations in Costa Rica, or simply take a shuttle service to the airports at the end of their stay. The different international or typical food restaurants will please even those with the most demanding palates.
Vendors of handicrafts are organized and have their own stands and very rarely approach tourists to sell souvenirs on the beach. They usually have a fixed stand on the main street a few meters from the beach, where visitors may purchase beautiful souvenirs created by local artists with Costa Rican materials.
Naturally, there is always somebody selling coconut water or soft drinks to all those who wish to refresh themselves.
There are many activities in Playa Samara and Carrillo to enjoy, such as horseback riding to observe monkeys, turtles, crocodiles, birds, and other native animals, recreational or sport fishing tours, hikes to nearby rivers and waterfalls, kayaking, snorkeling in Isla Chora, Canopy tours, the Zoo, Spanish lessons, dancing, and of course surfing. You can’t get bored.
To the East of Playa Carrillo and Playa Samara is Playa Camaronal, and to the West Playa Buena Vista these beaches are just a short drive from Samara and Carrillo but offer a different experience. Both beaches are well-known and appreciated because they are wild life refuges, protecting the nesting sites of marine turtles. The government has declared the beaches of Camaronal and Buena Vista protected zones because of the constant arrival of turtles for spawning. This has made them into non-exploited and well-cared for beaches by residents and tourists, and are well known by local surfers as beaches with strong waves where they can surf peacefully without nearby swimmers. The paths to reach these beaches have magnificent scenery since rivers must be crossed and small roads in the jungle without any nearby houses or pedestrians, must be passed through. Along the way there are also several small fishing communities full of friendly people who sell fruits or ice cream near the shore.
You can get to these beaches on horseback or by car. They are beautiful beaches with a unique landscape, an uninterrupted peace, with beautiful sunrises and sun settings.
In our zone, the climate and the seawater are always warm, the temperature being constant the whole year round: 87 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit.
The dry season begins in November and ends in April, which is the best time for fruits and fishing.
The rainy season begins in May and ends in mid-November, the landscape in Costa Rica at this time of the year is green and exuberant.
